Engine Yard recently released a Vagrant-built virtual machine image that it uses when training Ruby and Rails to new developers. Since it's a virtual machine, the host operating system can be ignored and the image provides a clean, stable environment with several editors, packages, and gems pre-installed. It's a simple way to get someone into Ruby and Rails who may be hesitant to take the plunge.
